U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth visited Hanoi on Sunday and said that the U.S. seeks a deeper military cooperation with Vietnam. He is meeting the senior leaders of Vietnam including Vietnam Defence Minister Phan Van Giang.

The U.S. is slated to deliver three T-6 trainer aircraft among other military equipment.

Vietnam is a strategic ally of the United States, and the United States supports funding and training of direct military intervention of Vietnam primarily due to Cold War fears of communism spreading in Southeast Asia.

According to Domino Theory, on the backdrop of a rising China, the U.S. fears that if Vietnam became communist, all of Southeast Asia would eventually fall to communism.

After the division of Vietnam into South and North in 1954, communist China and Soviet Russia had recognized North Vietnam. However, South and North reunited in 1976 and now Vietnam is a combination of socialism and capitalism.
