Year 2025 is bowing out to the New Year 2026. The out-going year is leaving some unforgettable events behind, many of which may continue to shape the geo-trade and politics in the coming years or even decades.
Here are what geotradepolitics.com thinks the five most important global events that left the world spinning or soothing.
The Return of Donald Trump
Election for the most powerful office in the world always becomes a global event. But return of Mr. Donald J. Trump as the 47th president of the United States of America is probably the biggest global event of 2025. His stated and focused promise, ‘America First’, accompanied with it policies that he thought were necessary for making ‘America Great Again’. The tariff towards trade partners who his administration thought unduely gained trade surplus against the U.S. in the bilateral global trade, is one of the most important policies of his administration. Nations like Mexico, Canada, and China, European Union, India to name a few, came under the impact of Trump’s tariff. They continue to look forward to negotiate with the United States and solve their respective tariff issues.
President Trump’s revision of the United States’ foreign policy with Europe is another important global event. Europe has changed completely. It has changed its outlook towards security after President Trump adopted his new foreign policy. Europe has also started looking for new trade partners beyond the United States.
Peace in Gaza
Ceasefire in Gaza had been an election promise of U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump continued to pursue this objective, and a ceasefire in Gaza was finally announced on October 10 this year. However, this ceasefire is considered fragile.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine took an ugly turn when the Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023. The incident sparked off a retaliation from Israeli Defence Forces. The incident left Gaza completely devastated. And when the ceasefire was announced on October 10, life started lurching back, but life will never be like before.
No Ceasefire between Russia-Ukraine
It looked as if it was coming. Now, now, now…not this year. The 2025 ended without the ceasefire on Russia-Ukraine war. All efforts by U.S. President Donald Trump, who even held a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin have remained far from achieving the desired goal.
When the year 2025 is closing, Russia was studying the ceasefire proposal that has been presented by the United States. The world community may have to wait longer— into next year—for a ceasefire on Russia-Ukraine war.
Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymir Zelenski is meeting U.S. President Donald Trup in Florida on Sunday to discuss peace plan in the backdrop of continued Russian strikes to pressurize Ukraine to accept demand for ceding territory in exchange for peace.
Theft in Paris’ Louvre Museum
The theft in Louvre on October 19 this year would be remembered as a global event as the stolen items involved some historic jewels of French royalty including those of Marie-Louise and Empress Eugénie.
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
The year 2025 has witnessed a sharp global surge in the sector of Artificial Intelligence indicating that the world is set for a further technological evolution where AI rules every walk of life.
Tech giant, Microsoft has announced an investment of USD 17.5 billion in India to boost its cloud and AI infrastructure. This investment announcement is largest ever investment in Asia and is all set to change the India sub-continent and beyond.
