Russia has denounced what it called "excessive military force" by the United States in the Caribbean Sea deployed as part of a drive reportedly against drug trafficking. Russia also reaffirmed its support for Venezuela.

A post by Russia’s foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova in the ministry’s website said: "We firmly denounce the use of excessive military force in carrying out actions in anti-drugs operations," adding that “such actions are in violation of both U.S. domestic legislation ... and the norms of international law."

With fighter jets, warships and thousands of troops, the U.S. during the last few weeks has built up a huge military presence in the Caribbean which Washington terms as an exercise to target illegal drug trade. The operation has so far killed 61 as reports suggest.

In recent days, the two nations are at loggerheads as the U.S.'s refuses to recognize Nicolás Maduro as the legitimate president.

Besides, Venezuela is aligned to U.S.’s geopolitical rivals like Russia and China.

Key points of differences as of late 2025, include, the disputed 2024 presidential election, which the U.S. and a few other countries have condemned as a ‘fraud’. The U.S. does not recognize Maduro's third term and has instead expressed support for opposition figures, previously Juan Guaidó and currently Edmundo González Urrutia, as the legitimate leaders.

The U.S. also has declared an "armed conflict" against Venezuelan drug cartels, including the Cartel de los Soles and the Tren de Aragua gang. Since September 2025, the U.S. military has conducted numerous lethal airstrikes on suspected drug-trafficking boats in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific, killing many.

The U.S. views Russia and China's as financial and militarily supporting the Maduro regime, which it feels is an encroachment on its sphere of influence in the Western Hemisphere.

In response to the U.S. actions, Maduro has increased military readiness, and has been holding military drills with Russia.
