Tension between Pakistan and Afghanistan has escalated after Islamabad launched air-strikes on Afghan cities of Kabul, Kandahar and Paktika.

Pakistan has said the strikes were carried out in response to an offensive by Taliban Afghanistan against Pakistani military posts near the borders of the north-western province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Thursday night.

Pakistani defence minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has said Pakistan is in “open war” with Afghanistan. "Our patience has now run out," the Pakistani defence minister has said, adding that the response was against the unprovoked attack by the Taliban Afghanistan.

The two neighbouring countries have been going through mutual tension and during the last few months there had been incidences of mutual clashes.

While Pakistan is known to be having nuclear weapon, and is superior to Afghanistan in military power, Afghanistan is known for its guerrilla fighters with a long experience of fighting, including fighting with the U.S. army.
