FIFA is discussing a major overhaul in the offside rule, which if agreed upon, could enter the game in 2026, and would be playing big impact in the outcome of the 2026 World Cup.
According to the proposal, an offside would, if approved, now amount only if an attacker’s entire body is ahead of the last defender. At present, the offside rule holds if any body part of the striker is ahead of the last defender.
The proposal with regard to overhauling the offside rule had come into discussion after Gianni Infantino addressed the issue publicly at the World Sport Summit in Dubai recently.
If the offside rule is revisited, the new rule could reshape the modern game.
There however have been counter-arguments which hold that, if revisited, the new offside rule would be unduly favouring the striker, and would put the defender in a difficult spot.
