Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in India’s business capital Mumbai city on a visit that he wants to utilize to reset his county’s ties with world’s most populated nation.
Carney would also be traveling New Delhi to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Canadian prime minister is reportedly exploring new ties in Asia including India in order to expand his nation’s trade and other bilateral relations and lessen Canada’s dependencies with the United States.
Canada-India ties had soured in the recent past after the administration of former prime minister Justin Trudeau alleged that the Indian government was linked to the assassination of a Canadian citizen, a Sikh separatist leader. India had denied any link with the assassination.
A large number of Canadian citizens have their roots in India’s Punjab.
